Alpine residents enjoy easy access to a diverse selection of great outdoor activities. Just an hour and a half drive from town is Big Bend National park, where it's said that the rainbows wait for rain, and where over one thousand acres of rugged desert and mountains wait for discovery. The Rio Grande River and Mexico are easily accessible to the south, and the towering Davis Mountains rise to the north. The beauty of the mountains and desert, plant and animal life never ceases to impress visitors, and even locals find themselves blinking in amazement from time to time. Nearby State and National Parks are perfect for overnight camping, spending the day hiking, biking or driving through the majestic splendor of its natural setting.

Nestled in among the Davis Mountains and the Chihuahuan Desert, Alpine's mild climate allows locals to enjoy the outdoors year-round. Of course, those who choose not to venture to the mountains can stay closer to town. Horseback riding in the fields, biking the back roads and golfing on the fine courses are all very popular activities. One of the best things about Alpine is that no matter what activity you choose, it will be accompanied with beautiful scenery.

From bull riding to bucking broncos, locals always have a good time at city rodeos. The National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association got its start in Alpine, and the freshest talent around comes to town every year for top competition. When the new school year begins each fall, Alpine's Sul Ross State University campus welcomes its new rodeo team and opens a brand new year of sports.

Baseball fans will also look forward to the long afternoons at Kokernot Field, home to the SRSU Lobos. College sports are always a refreshing and exciting change of pace from professional contests, especially when the hometown team plays in your own back yard. Alpine was once home to the minor-league Alpine Cowboys, who were the first to play at Kokernot Field. In addition to the great games played inside the ballpark, it is renowned for its intriguing design. Built with wrought iron and stone native to the Alpine area, the park was even featured in Sports Illustrated.
